Tyler Shough Makes Strong Statement in Saints’ Preseason Opener

The New Orleans Saints got their first real look at the ongoing quarterback battle during Sunday’s preseason loss to the Los Angeles Chargers — and rookie Tyler Shough made sure to turn heads.

Head coach Kellen Moore started the game with Spencer Rattler under center, as the 2024 fifth-round pick faced a tough Chargers second-unit defense. Rattler struggled to find a consistent rhythm but showed flashes with his mobility. He completed 7-of-11 passes for 53 yards in the opening quarter, extending drives with his legs when protection broke down.

“I thought Spencer did some good stuff using his feet in certain situations,” Moore said. “We just weren’t able to finish drives and get points on the board.”

Shough’s Mixed Start — and Big Response

When Rattler’s night ended, it was Shough’s turn. The 2025 second-rounder faced an early setback, throwing a pick-six to Eric Rogers on a third-and-6 attempt. But the rookie didn’t let that mistake define his debut.

On the very next drive, Shough bounced back in spectacular fashion. From shotgun formation, he launched a deep strike down the left sideline to Mason Tipton for a 54-yard touchdown — the Saints’ biggest play of the game.

Moore praised the rookie’s resilience:

“We’ll learn from the interception and grow. His response was really valuable.”

Shough finished the game 15-of-22 for 165 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Haener Gets Limited Time

Jake Haener saw minimal action, entering with just five minutes left in the fourth quarter. The 2023 fourth-round pick completed 5-of-8 passes for 41 yards and an interception.

Snap counts told the story of the competition: Shough led the way with 29 snaps, Rattler followed with 28, and Haener logged just nine.

QB Competition Heats Up

With three quarterbacks vying for the job, Sunday’s game provided the Saints coaching staff with valuable insight. All eyes now turn to next Sunday, when New Orleans hosts No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter and the Jacksonville Jaguars at Caesars Superdome (1 p.m. ET, NFL Network).
